The Waystream Field Manual · Ryan J. Colby

The Promise
Cancer is part of the story. It is not the whole story.
The River Through the Rocks is for men who are tired of being reduced to scans, symptoms, scars, fear, and survival mode. It is a guide for the deeper work that begins when a man starts asking what faith, strength, brotherhood, purpose, and calling look like beyond cancer.
Faith
For men learning how to seek God honestly in the middle of uncertainty.
Brotherhood
For men who need real connection, not shallow encouragement.
Renewal
For men ready to reclaim life, purpose, and identity beyond diagnosis.
Why This Book Exists
When treatment quiets down, deeper questions often surface.
The River Through the Rocks does not offer easy answers. It creates space for men to ask better questions before God.
- —Who am I now?
- —What has cancer changed?
- —How do I lead my family from here?
- —How do I pray when I am tired?
- —How do I stop carrying this alone?
- —What is God still calling me to become?

The River Metaphor
The river does not deny the rocks. It moves through them.
The river is the central image of Waystream. It represents renewal, release, movement, the Holy Spirit, and the grace of God moving through hard places. The rocks are real — cancer, fear, fatigue, grief, uncertainty, scars, and loss. But the current still moves.
This is the heart of the book.
Who It's For
For men living beyond cancer.
This field manual is for men in survivorship, stable maintenance seasons, or any season after diagnosis where the deeper questions of identity, faith, relationships, and purpose have begun to surface.

The Written Companion
The written companion to the Waystream experience.
The River Through the Rocks carries the same heart as the Waystream retreat: Faith, Fellowship, Fieldcraft, and Formation. It can stand alone as a guide for men living beyond cancer, and it also serves as a companion for men preparing for or returning from the Waystream retreat.
